Mar 2018 - Constad Cup and Stannard Shield Second Round reports (reporter - Robin Plunkett)

Constad - In the second round of the constad cup Cowplain Crimson beat Eastoke Leopards 6-1 with three from Eric Ribovic and two from Jerry Wilson. Emsworth Eagles crushed Cowplain Alexandra 5-0 with two apiece for Lynn Candlish and Paul Fitzgerald and another by Pete Grubb. Cowplain Cocktails beat Knowle Green 7-2 with hat tricks from Paul May and Roger Winkworth. Portsmouth Crimson trounced Phoenix Pluto 9-0 with their combination of Julian and Dylan Linsell plus Rob Lewis. Knowle Rovers beat St Claers Ospreys 6-1 with three by Graham Taylor and two from Alan Baldwin. Soberton defeated Emsworth Bluebell Pirates 5-1 with doubles from Pete Woodacre and Richard Billings. In an all Phoenix battle Saturn won 6-3 versus Satellites. Jim Malcolm won three and Andy Green won twice as did Duncan Poole of the losers. Emsworth Seagulls got the better of Avenue Swifts by a 6-3 margin. Sandy Collier was unbeaten, with a further two by John Churchill. Andy Bates replied with a brace for Swifts.

Stannard - In the stannard Shield Sporting St Clares beat Emsworth Lobsters 5-2 with three from Patrick Gemmell and a pair from Alan Wiggins. Emsworth Eagles beat Cowplain Emerald 5-0 with Lynn Candlish and Richard Stephen winning two each. Phoenix Satellites beat St Clares Ospreys 7-1 with two from Richard Stone in the first sequence, then two from Neil Lockton in the second sequence which was matched by Mike Turner who won two very close rubbers. Cowplain Cocktails won 7-1 at the expense of Emsworth Pirates. John Taylor won all four of his rubbers, with Roger Winkworth adding three. Portsmouth Crimson edged out Emsworth Seagulls 5-3 as Andy Green won all of his four rubbers.

Apr 2017 - Constad Cup and Stannard Shield Semi Final & Final Reports (reporter - Robin Plunkett)

Constad - Soberton and Newtown retained the constad cup when they beat Cowplain Crimson 5-2 in the final. Dave Woodacre and Russ Anderson won two apiece for the victors, with Bill Moody adding a single. For Crimson Eric Ribovic had a good win over Woodacre and Mike Lee beat Moody, but lost to Anderson in the deciding set. In the semi final Soberton beat Portsmouth Crimson 5-2 as Woodacre won a great treble. He was supported by Richard Billings and Bill Moody with one each, having both lost to Dylan Linsell Five rubbers went the distance . Cowplain Crimson won 5-2 versus Cowplain Cocktails in their semi final. Ribovic won an impressive maximum, and was supported by Derek Wilson and Jerry Wilson who took singles. For Cocktails John Taylor and Billy Edwards both won once.

Stannard - In the Stannard Shield for veterans Portsmouth Crimson beat Sporting St Clares 5-2 in the final. In the first sequence of four rubbers Rob Lewis played superbly to take his two rubbers. Stephen Nelson Smith got the only reply v Andy Green.In the second sequence Rob Lewis beat Trevor Dodd to make it 4-1 to Crimson. Graham Wiggins then cut the lead to 4-2 by beating Stan Marlow, but Marlow made amends to seal the trophy for Crimson by beating Dodd. These last three rubbers all went the distance.In St Clares semi final they beat Cocktails 5-2 with a treble by Nelson Smith and a double by Wiggins. For Cocktails Steve Waterson and John Taylor beat Wiggins in the first half of games, but crucially lost to him in the crunch second half of the match.In the other semi final Portsmouth Crimson got revenge over Soberton for their defeat from the previous night. The match went to a doubles shoot out as the teams finished at four rubbers each.Lewis and Green took it 22-20 in the final set over Billings and Anderson. Earlier Green won a good three rubbers, with Lewis getting one. For Soberton Billings also won three, while Anderson could only get a single.

Mar 2017 - 2017 Portsmouth Closed Report (reporter - Stephen Nelson-Smith)

This weekend saw the annual Portsmouth and District Closed Table Tennis tournament, held at Admiral Lord Nelson School. In what was the biggest entry for many years, players from all four divisions competed across ten different competitions.

The morning kicked off with action at both ends of the age spectrum, with the veterans singles and junior singles. Top seed, Portsmouth’s Yaj Vashee won the U18 event, in fine form, with another promising Portsmouth junior, Tom Poynter, overcoming Generation 2’s Josh Cooksley on his way to second position. Portsmouth league chairman, Pete Woodacre, defeated reigning champion Paul May, to win the veterans title, which he last won ten years previously.

The Peter Goldring Special event, for players in division two and below, saw a superlative effort from league newcomer Damian Gadzinski. The Avenue club's unbeaten fourth division star stormed through the earlier stages, overcoming strong second division opposition, where he met Tom Poynter. In a nail-biting and emotional finish, the youngster pulled back from 10-8 down in the deciding set to win 12-10. A superb display by both players, and Poynter showed remarkable resilience to hold on for the win.

The mens’ singles title was retained by Soberton’s Dave Woodacre, but the performance of the event belonged to Generation 2’s Mike Cooksley, who overcame third seed Paul May, and then his son Josh (having himself knocked out the number one seed) to meet Woodacre in a fiercely contested final.

The consolation singles allowed Gadzinski to shine once more. Having made Yaj Vashee and Tim Hampton fight hard to qualify in the singles, he repeated his Peter Godlring defeat of top division two player Paul Fitzgerald, before beating two division one players to claim the title. A brilliant display, especially given the sheer number of back-to-back games he had to play, without a break. Generation 2’s Dan Ashworth put up a good fight in the final, but the newcomer was undaunted.

In the ladies’ singles, again it was a Portsmouth player who emerged victorious - Pin Ka Yiu impressing as she overwhelmed Generation 2’s Tulay Dundar, before joining clubmate Yaj Vashee to win the mixed doubles. Dundar and Ka Yiu were too strong for reigning champions Morle and Greenwood, winning the women’s doubles, emphatically.

In the mens’ doubles, Paul May and Roger Winkworth proved what a formidable team they make, with their aggressive and intelligent play proving to be too much for the in-form Woodacres.

The last event of the day was the Handicap Singles. Last year’s finalist, Portsmouth’s Dylan Linsell played outstandingly to reach the final again, demolishing Generation 2’s highly rated division one player, Tom Chamberlain in the semi-final. In the other half of the draw, Dave Woodacre showed incredible reserves of energy and determination to squeeze past Yaj Vashee in the quarter final. With the other Linsell brother, Julian, given a healthy start in the semi-final, against the singles champion, there was a real chance of a sibling final, but Woodacre showed his class to cruise into the final, where he completed an impressive day’s play to add this title to his collection.

A thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable day’s competition, and a marvellous showcase for the talent within the Portsmouth league.

Nov 2016 - Constad Cup and Stannard Shield Reports (reporter - Robin Plunkett)

Constad - In the constad cup two man Emsworth Seagulls lost 5-4 at Cowplain Emerald as John Churchill and Sandy Collier won a pair apiece for the losing outfit. Pete Mclennan and Gary Churchill won a single each for the winners. Cowplain Crimson edged out Emsworth Eagles 5-4 with Drek Wilson and Eric Ribovic taking a couple each. Paul Fitzgerald was Eagles best player with a double. Cowplain Cocktails defeated St Clares Ospreys 5-1 with two apiece for Steve Waterson and Roger Winkworth. Gordon White got the consolation v Billy Edwards. Eastoke Lions beat clubmates Tigers 8-1 with trebles by Barry Hartley and Andy Summers. John Morgan responded by beating Garry Bannister.

Stannard - In the stannard Shield holders Soberton were given a stern test by Phoenix Saturn before winning a 5-3 margin. Richard Billings won four rubbers and Adrian Hunt an important single. Cowplain Cocktails beat Phoenix Satellites 5-4 after a doubles shoot out.Man of the match Neil Lockton won a tremendous four games for the losers, but Winkworth and John Taylor won the rest of the rubbers. Portsmouth Crimson beat St Clares Ospreys 5-4.

Apr 2016 - Constad Cup and Stannard Shield Reports (reporter - Robin Plunkett)

Soberton and Newtown won the Constad cup after beating Knowle Rovers 5-2 who put up a brave fight. Richard Billings put Soberton 1 up by beating Alan Baldwin 22-13,22-17 using his spinny and powerful lefthanded forehand loop to great effect. Russ Anderson then doubled the lead using his very steady play to beat Graham Taylor 24-13,24-6 having had an 11 point start. Trevor Farrow then played superbly to beat Dave Woodacre 22-20,10-22,22-19 to cut the arrears to 2-1. Farrow used his very spinny backhand loop and powerful forehand to full effect. Billings then beat Taylor 23-19,23-17 having given a 6 start away. Taylor did well to return many loops, but the follow up shots by Billings were often to hard to handle. Woodacre was then superb to defeat Baldwin 22-12,22-11. Farrow was then in tremendous form to beat Anderson 25-23, 25-22 having given his opponent a massive 15 point start. This made it 4-2. Woodacre then clinched the match v Taylor with tricky serves and fierce forehand kills.

In the semi final Soberton beat Div 3 champions Portsmouth Crimson 5-2 with the same line-up. For Crimson Dylan Linsell beat Anderson and Stan Marlow beat Woodacre, but Billings(2), Anderson(2) and Woodacre(1) saw Soberton home. In their semi Rovers crushed Cowplain Crimson (third in div 4) 6-0 with two each from Baldwin,Taylor and Farrow. Eric Ribovic put up the only real resistance by taking Baldwin and Farrow to the final set.

Soberton completed the cup double the next night by winning the Stannard Shield 5-3 at the expense of Phoenix Satellites. Robin Plunkett put Soberton 1-0 up by beating Mike Turner 23-21, 23-10.Anderson doubled the lead by beating Neil Lockton 23-11,23-17 having had a 9 point start. Anderson then put Soberton 3 up by beating Turner in 3 sets. Lockton then pulled one back by beating Plunkett 18-23,23-13,23-14. Lockton kept the ball on the table well and punished the loose ball on both wings. In the second sequence of matches Jim Malcolm and Richard Stone were brought in for Satellites, while Bill Moody came in for Plunkett for Soberton. Malcolm had a 7 start v Moody and won 17-23, 23-16,23-18 to cut Soberton’s lead to 3-2. Malcolm produced good chop shots and good attacks on both wings. Anderson cruised through Stone 23-6,23-16.However Stone used his 7 start on Moody to win 23-17,23-21 to cut Soberton lead to 4-3. A 4-4 draw would have meant a nail biting doubles shoot out, but Anderson had other ideas and crushed Malcolm 23-6, 23-16 as Malcolm’s attack was often missing against the rock steady Anderson.

Mar 2015 - Portsmouth Closed Results

Dave Woodacre won the mens singles held at Admiral Lord Nelson school on the 13th march.Paul May won the veterans, doubles and mixed doubles.Geraldine Morle won the womens singles, womens doubles and mixed. In the first event at 9 am. Paul May won his veterans quarter final against Graeme Smith in 4 sets. Second seed Robin Plunkett won his quarter with Dave Morgan in straight sets as did third seed Pete Woodcare v Eric Harvey.fourth seed Mike cooksley in their quarter fared likewise v Stan Marlow.In the first semi May beat woodacre 11-5,11-9,11-6.Cooksley outplayed Plunkett in their semi 11-6,11-3,11-1.top seed May won the final 11-7,11-6,14-12.

In the juniors Dylan Linsell came out on top in the final group of 3.He edged out Kane Beale 12-10 in the fifth leg and then beat Billy Blades three straight.Blades beat Beale in straight sets to claim the runners up spot.

In the Peter Goldring tournament for non div 1 players, Billy Blades again beat Beale in straight sets in their quarter final.Number one seed tim Hampton beat Stan Marlow in their quarter in straight sets.sixth seed linsell knocked out second Steve Long 11-7,11-7,11-4.Geraldine Morle the seventh seed put out third Dave Morgan in five sets.In the first semi Hampton beat Morle in 4 sets, with Linsell faring likewise v Blades.Hampton played superbly to win the final v Linsell 11-7,12-10,11-5.

In the mens singles number one seed May knocked out fifth seed Roger Winkworth in five sets having also eliminated Ian Brown.Second seed Dave Woodacre beat dad Pete in their quarter group and Cooksley in 5 sets.seventh seed Hampton knocked out third Plunkett in straight sets.Pete Grubb having earlier beat Woodacre eliminated Graham Wiggins and Graeme Smith.In the first semi May beat Hampton in 4 sets.Dave Woodacre despatched Grubb in straight sets in their semi.woodacre beat May in their final 11-6,11-9,6-11,12-14,11-7.In the mens consolation Blades knocked out Linsell.Beale won the other group v Simon Rignall and Stephen Nelson Smith.Beale won the final in beating Blades at the third attempt in a thrilling final in three very tight legs.

In the womens singles Geraldine Morle won all of her rubbers in straight games.Jill Clarke got runners up beating Sandra Collier in five sets and Jill Greenwood 3 legs to nil.The womens doubles was won by Morle and Greenwood v Collier and Clarke 3-11,9-11,11-8,11-7,11-6.In the mixed doubles semi Morle and May beat Collier and Harvey in a very tight 4 setter.Brian and Jill Greenwood beat Clarke and Rignall 11-7,11-8,11-9.May and Morle won the final 11-7,11-2,11-5.

In the mens doubles top seeds May and Winkworth beat Grubb and Cooksley in 5 sets.The Woodacre’s beat Smith and Brown in straight sets in their semi.May and Winkworth won the final 13-11,11-7,11-4.

The fun event of the day the handicap singles saw 19 entries.Winkworth beat Beale 23-25,24-14,23-21 having given a 10 start.In the other semi Linsell had to give Stephen Nelson Smith a 7 start, but won 23-20,23-16.Winkworth had to give Linsell 7 points in the final, but played brilliantly to win 21-23,23-20,23-14.

The day was excellently organised by Steve and Linda Long with a good hand from Pete Woodcre.They were delighted to see a field of 18 in the mens singles

Apr 2015 - Constad Cup and Stannard Shield Reports (reporter - Robin Plunkett)

NPJS Blue completed a remarkable double.Having won Division five with ease they added the Constad Cup which is a handicap where the lower league teams get the chance to take on some of the best players in the district, In their semi final the Blues edged out Cowplain Cocktails of Division one 5-4 thanks largely to Wayne Hoyle's treble having maded full use of his 13 handicap.Brian Moore added one off 16 as did Steve Bell off 8. For Cocktails Paul May won twice having a 0 handicap, which was matched by Billy Edwards playing off 3. Knowle Rovers beat Cowplain Crimson 5-2 in their semi as Eric Ribovic put up the only resistance with a pair. Alan Baldwin won both of his rubbers for Rovers and Trevor Farrow won two from his three as Rovers won 5-2. Graham Taylor added an impotant single.In the final Blue played superbly to beat Div two champions Rovers 5-1 as Moore won two deciding leg rubbers and Bell won twice again. Alan Baldwin saved the rout by beating Hoyle having given away 10 points.

In the stannard shield for veterans Cowplain Cocktails got consolation for their constad loss by winning another exciting final. In their semi with Soberton and Newtown they found Robin Plunkett in top form beating May and Waterson twice and losing only one set. In the first sequence of matches Bill Moody failed to add any rubbers having crucially lost a 19-15 deciding leg lead v May. In the second sequence Pete Woodacre came in for Soberton, but couldn't trouble the scorers as he lost to Steve Waterson and May. Against Waterson the 3 start he had to give made all the difference as he lost two deuce legs. In the doubles shoot out Soberton opted to play Woodacre and Moody, but they were easily outclassed by May and Waterson as Cocktails triumphed 5-4.In the second semi Portsmouth Crimson's Mike Lee was man of the match winning four rubbers as they triumphed 6-2 versus Cowplain Yellow. Both sequences ended 3-1 in Crimson's favour with Stan Marlow beating John Manuel in the first sequence then Roland Grant in the second sequence. Fred Dowding could hang his head high as he won 2 for the beaten outfit.

In the final the first sequence ended all square 2-2 as May was superb in beating Marlow and Lee having given them 15 and 11 respectively. In the second sequence May crucially beat Marlow 25-23 in the final leg having saved 7 match points in the previous leg. Lee then beat Waterson again to level the scores 3-3, but lost to Cocktails May again. Waterson then clinched the cup 5-3 by beating Marlow 25-23,26-24 having given way 13 points.

In their quarter final Blue survived a scare before defeating Cowplain Emerald 5-4 thanks to Moore's maximum. Davina Roberts replied with a brace for Emerald.Crimson beat Eastoke Tigers 6-3 with Jerry Wilson taking a hat trick, as John Morgan responded with a double. Cocktails won their quarter 5-2 versus NPJS Green whose Paul Fitzgerald won twice. For the victors Roger Winkworth won two from two as Steve Waterson won two from three.Rovers beat Cowplain Crimson 5-1.

In the Stannard quarter final Cocktails won 6-2 at the expense of Eastoke Tigers for whom Matthew Saunders beat Waterson in the first sequence, then in the second he beat Roger Winkworth.In a tight match Soberton beat NPJS Blue 5-3 with Pete Woodacre winning four rubbers with three going the distance. Adrian Hunt got the other v Moore.Portsmouth Crimson crushed Portsmouth Cerulean 5-0 with three by Marlow and two from Lee.Cowplain Yellow got a walkover v NPJS Purple.

Mar 2015 - Ports Closed 2015 (reporter - Robin Plunkett)

The Portsmouth Table tennis closed was held on 1st March 2015 at the Admiral Lord Nelson school. the three stars of the tournament were Robin Plunkett and Paul May who won two titles apiece, but this was eclipsed by the third star Sarah Hilditch with three titles. the entry total was disappointingly small, but there was quality play as always. the first event of the day at 9 am was the cadet singles. In the first semi group Samuel Adie stunned strong div 1 player Vincent Cheung by beating him thus going through to the final.In the other group Thomas Poynter easily dispatched Sam Robertson and Luke Blay. the final was won by Adie 9-11,13-11,11-7,11-5.

In the veterans event no 1 seed Robin Plunkett drew Michael Cooksley in his group and crashed out by losing their 5 setter as Cooksley played a very consistent game changing the pace of the ball with his whippy backhand loop and virtually unreturnable forehand hits.Ricky Hensman won group two by knocking out second seed Bill Moody who picked up a back injury and had to make for home. Paul May the third seed won group 3 to head for the final group of 3. May triumphed by beating Cooksley 8-11,11-7,11-5,11-8 having beaten Hensman 11-8,11-8,11-8. The race for runners up went to the wire as Cooksley beat Hensman 11-5,7-11,12-10,4-11,11-9.

In the junior singles Sam Adie knocked out Kane Beale in their semi as did Dylan Linsell v Billy Blades in 4 sets.Adie won a thrilling final 9-11,11-8,3-11,14-12,11-9. Blades and Beale won the junior doubles having edged out Adie and Luke Blay 8-11,11-6,11-13,11-9,11-9 in a final group of 3 pairs.. Adie and Blay were runners up.

In the Peter goldring event for non div one players Adie was knocked out in his group of 3 by Hensman and Steve Bell both 12-10 in the 4th set.In the first semi group of 3 Pete Grubb progressed to the final after beating Fitzgerald 12-10,11-7,10-12,11-7 and Steve Bell in 5 sets.In the other group it waas musical chairs as Hensman beat Ray Jarratt who beat Linsell, then Dylan beat Hensman in straight sets, thus winning on a better won lost sets ratio.linsell continued his fine form to win the final v Grubb-18-16,11-7,6-11,11-6.

In the blue riband event no 1 seed Dave Woodacre topped his opening group after beating May in 4 sets.No 2 seed Plunkett overcame Fitzgerald and Linsell who lost to him in 4 tight sets.In the first semi group woodacre was knocked out by Cheung 5-11,11-3,11-8,11-7.In Plunkett's semi group he lost for a second time v Cooksley, but was given a lifeline when May beat Cooksley also in 5 sets. Plunkett then ruthlessly destroyed May in straight games to win the group on sets countback. In the final Cheung was regarded as slight favorite which he emphasised in the first two sets using his deceptive top spin serves and attacking shots to take a two leg lead 11-9,11-9. but then Plunkett got used to his serves and got his brick wall like block shots off to a tee taking the next 3 legs and the match 11-6,11-3,11-7.The consolation singles was won by Steve Bell beating Fitzgerald in 4 sets and Smith in a thriller 5-11,11-7,11-6,6-11,15-13.

In the womens singles strong div 1 player sarah Hilditch beat Sandy Collier, Dagmar Wilkinson and Geraldine Morle with her tricky serves and strong hitting on both wings.Morle was runner up having crucially defeated Wilkinson 11-6,8-11,11-2,8-11,11-5.

In the mens doubles Plunkett and Woodacre the no 1 seeds beat Graeme Smith and Steve Long in their semi in 4 sets 8-11,11-5,11-5,11-8.Second seeds Cheung and Cooksley beat Fitzgerald and Grubb 11-9,8-11,11-8,11-5. In the final Woodacre used his top spin shots and lightning forehand kills with Plunkett playing the anchor role in their 11-9,11-5,11-7 win.In the womens doubles Collier and Hilditch breezed the final against Morle and Wilkinson 11-4,11-4,11-7.In the mixed doubles top seeds Hilditch and Bell beat Wilkinson and Daniel Osterman in 4 sets.Morle and Jarratt beat Collier and Eric Harvey in the other semi without dropping a leg.Hilditch and Bell ran away with the final winning 11-5,11-3,11-6.

In the fun event of the day the handicap singles Bell only had to give Morle 2 points in their quarter final but lost 23-21 in the deciding set. Kieran Moore's steady play helped him beat Collier with a 5 start 23-14 also in the final leg. Paul May easily beat Jarratt who couldn't control his whippy backhand loop as his 6 start was far from enough.Hilditch easily also beat Fitzgerald 22-16,22-17 having given way 3 pioints.In another thriller Hilditch scraped home against Morle in their semi 25-21,23-25,29-27 having given away 11 points.May was again brilliant in his semi with Moore winning 26-20, 26-20 having had to give away a massive 16 points start.May ended the day in style beating Hilditch 11-22,22-12,22-7 having had a 3 point start. Hilditch was once ranked insided the top 40 womens national rankings.

Feb 2015 - NPJS Hampshire Success (Steve Bell)

Northern Parade Junior school, motivated by their success in the Portsmouth competition, moved onto county level and captured the Hampshire Girls and Boys titles for the first time . Jasmine Williams, who came second last year, won the girls title without dropping a game by beating her team mate Chloe Vince in the semi finals followed by Anaya Patel from Basingstoke in the finals. After giving away an early lead in the first two of the final games, Jasmine came back to win the final in three straight games. Jasmine continues to improve and will now attend the national level competition sometime in April and will no doubt move up the England rankings from her starting point of 60th. Chloe Vince, who had to play all of the top 5 girls, fought her way through to a very creditable third position.

Following Jasmine's success, Sam Robertson breezed into the semi finals having won all of his games in the group stage. In the semi finals he saw off his challenger in three straight games to set up a challenge for the title in the final. Sam then flew into a two game lead but, lost the third. He composed himself to come back and win the fourth to complete a clean sweep for NPJS. This is Sam's first season of success and he has improved no end after attending extra Saturday coaching at the school and Monday nights at the Portsmouth coaching sessions hosted by Brian Hall. Alfie Wiseman didn't quite make the semis but had an excellent first ever Hampshire tournament.

Our pupils now hold both of the Portsmouth and Hampshire individual titles and the Portsmouth and Hampshire Girls team titles. Video footage of the finals and semi finals can be seen on the competitions page of the NPJS website, or the NPJS you tube channel.

Jan 2015 - NPJS Progress Report (Steve Bell)

Northern Parade Junior School table tennis players dominated the Portsmouth primary schools individual tournament recently by capturing both the boys and girls single trophies. The after school table tennis club has helped to start the the children on the road to success with Jasmine Williams winning the girls trophy two years running and Sam Robertson gaining the boys trophy for the first time. The girls were totally dominant with all four semi finalists coming from the school.

This follows their previous success in the team competition, winning a place in the zonal finals after success at the Portsmouth and Hampshire events. The event winner Jasmine Williams, who has already competed in a national competition, beat Chloe Vince in the final, after beating Chloe's younger sister Beth in the semi finals. Beth Vince beat Nabila Choudury for third place. Sam Robertson won the boys competition for the first time with Alfie Wiseman taking fourth place. Jasmine , Beth, Sam and Alfie will now represent Portsmouth for the Hampshire schools individual tournament on the 13th of February. before that, the girls take on the cream of the South Eastern counties in the zonal competition, fighting for a place in the regional finals, on the 31 st of January.s

All of the children started playing at the school's after school club which has been running for three and half years following a grant for four tables from "sport for all " funding. NPJS also provides table tennis on the curriculum giving all 340 of its pupils the chance to learn to play table tennis.The school also provides a venue for five teams to play in the Portsmouth and district Table Tennis League, with one team in Division 1, two teams in division 2 and two in Division 5. The division 5 teams are a springboard for the children from the school into league table tennis.

Apr 6 2014 - Portsmouth Closed Tournament Report(from Robin Plunkett)

15 year old Jimmy Yeung from Priory school Portsmouth competed an amazing triple by winning the Portsmouth closed singles title on sunday 6th April. In the last two months Jimmy has beaten the best in Hampshire to win the county crown, then became the Southampton closed champion before completing a memorable treble at the Admiral Lord Nelson school.

The first event of the day was the cadet singles. No 1 seed Vincent Cheung progressed from his group by beating Yaj Vashee(4) and Lewis Beale(7).No 2 seed Thomas Poynter overcame Steven Jones(5) and Jasmine Williams(8) in his group. Third seed Billy Blades won his group by beating Kane Beale and Kieran Moore. These three seeds met each other in the final group to decide the winner. Cheung claimed the crown by winning his two rubbers in straight sets. Billy Blades did well to get the runners up medal by beating Poynter having trailed by two sets.

In the veterans the first semi final group saw top seed Mike Rhodes progress to the final by beating Mike Cooksley in straight sets and Pete Grubb in 4. Danny Lucking's tactic of getting an easier semi final group back fired as he lost to Pete Woodacre and 11-9 in the decider to Robin Plunkett. Plunkett the 4th seed then produced another minor shock by winning in straight sets against Woodacre(2), having saved a set point in leg two with a flukey high ball edge. In the final Mike Rhodes had the psycological edge having easily beaten Plunkett in their opening group game. Even though his opponent played better this time Rhodes won 11-6,11-8,11-4.

The final group of 4 in the junior singles saw Vincent Cheung come out on top but only after beating Yaj Vashee 6-11,11-5,4-11,11-6,11-7. Kieran Moore was third and Jasmine Williams was fourth but it gained her valuable experience.Cheung and Vashee then combined to win the junoir doubles against Williams and Moore in straight sets.

In the Peter goldring tournament for non div 1 players there were 9 entries. Dave Morgan caused a shock in his group game against top seed Graham Wiggins as both progessed to a semi final group of three.In group two the talented Eric Linsell repeated this pattern by beating second seed Paul Fitzgerald. Steve Bell then completed a treble of surprises as he topped his group with Pete Grubb seeded three second. Fitzgerald won his semi final group of three by eliminating Morgan and Grubb. It was musical chairs in the other semi group as Bell beat Linsell in 4 sets, but lost to Wiggins in 5 then, Linsell beat Wiggins in another five legger. Bell progesed to the final by virtue of his better sets won and lost ratio.Fitzgerald easily came out on top in the final winning 11-8,11-4,11-8.

The blue ribband event the mens singles was next on the menu. In his quarter final group Yeung beat Woodacre and Eric Linsell. Plunkett seeded 7 overcame Cooksley and Dylan Linsell( who had beaten him in a league match) both in straight sets despite a spirited come back from Cooksley. Rhodes seeded 4 easily beat Cheung and Vashee in his quarter group , but Vashee got some solice with a good victory over Cheung on this occasion. Second seed Billy Ho knocked out Lucking and Wiggins in his quarter group. The only surpise in Yeung's semi was he lost the first set to Plunkett 12-10, but breezed the next three which was to be expected. Ho beat Rhodes in 5 sets in their semi having trailed 5-3 at the turn round. Yeung won the title against Ho 15-13, 11-6, 11-9 having trailed leg 3 8-4. His ability to produce lightning backhand loop winners which were virtually unreturnable was the key difference against the nearly as impressive Ho.

Fitzgerald won the consolation event for first round losers by again beating Bell in straight sets.

Sarah hilditch was the top seed in the womens singles and romped way away with it by beating Sandra Collier who was second, Heather George and Williams.however Collier and George beat top seeds Hilditch and Williams in the womens doubles 8-11,11-7,11-7,15-13 in a nail biting final.

There were two quarter groups of 3 pairs in the mens doubles. Top seeds Ho and Lucking beat Cooksley and Cheung and Fitzgerald and Grubb. Despite their defeat Cooksley and Cheung qualified for the semi when they defeated Yeung and Dylan Linsell. Ho and Lucking won their semi v Morgan and Wiggins having surprisingly been taken the distance. Ho and co won the final 9-11,11-5,11-8,11-8.

In the mixed doubles semi top seeds Bell and Hilditch beat Williams and Ho in a 4 setter. George and Lucking seeded two got the better of Collier and Eric Harvey in straight sets in their semi.George and Lucking combined superbly to beat the top seeds in the final 11-6,11-8,11-8.

In arguably the most fun event the handicap singles Cooksley overcame Julian Linsell in their quarter final 24-19,29-27 having given way a 11 start. in a superb encounter Lucking had a slim 3 point start on Ho, but went off like a house on fire to increase his lead to ten points with accurate backhand looping and fierce winners, but he couldn't keep it up despite squeaking home in the first leg as Ho found his feet to comfortably take the following 2 legs. Plunkett overcame Grubb, 17-22,22-20,22-8 having given a 6 point handicap. Bell had to only give 1 point away to Collier and won 21-16,21-14. Plunkett who had been in brick wall defence form for much of the day saw Bell take a liking to his style by crunching fast backhands mixed with fast forehand kills in their semi. With a 11 point handicap he breezed their semi 24-12,24-10. Cooksley's 5 point advantage on Ho in their semi certainly wasn't enough as he lost 18-22,13-22. Bell more then met his match in the final as Ho won the final event of the day 25-21,25-21(having given a 14 point head start. Ho's service and looping on both wings was too much for his opponent.

Apr 2014 - Constad & Stannard 2014 Finals - R Plunkett

In the Constad Cup final Knowle Rovers beat NPJS Purple 5-3.Alan Baldwin won two from three having had very close games with Steve Bell and Duncan Poole. Graham Taylor added another having beaten Bell despite having given away 12 points.Trevor Farrow also won a pair for Rovers by beating Gary Bannister and Duncan Poole.For purple Bell won twice and Poole once.

In their semi Rovers beat Complain Blue 5-1 with maximums by Baldwin and Farrow.In Purples semi they beat Cowplain cobras 5-3.Bell was unbeaten while Gary Bannister made good use of his 13 handicap to win two

In the Stannard Shield Soberton and Newtown edged out Cowplain Cobras 5-4. In the first sequence of matches Robin Plunkett won twice for Soberton, but Steve Waterson and Roger Winkworth beat Sobrrton's Adrian Hunt who had a 15 handicap. Plunkett made it 3-2 by beating Waterson again. Richard Billings made it 4-2 with an excellent display v Winkworth. Waterson played a blinder v Billings to cut the deficit to 4-3. In possibly the game of the night Winkworth beat Plunkett 23-21 in the final set having trailed 20-17. Soberton then won the doubles shoot out with their combination of Billings and Pete Woodacre.

In their semi Soberton beat Sporting St Clare's 6-2 with Plunkett winning 4 rubbers. Cowplain Cobras beat Cowplain Blue in their semi by a 5-2 margin with Chris Plant playing superbly for Blue with two wins in the first sequence of matches, but in the second sequence John Amey and Trevor Emery couldn't trouble the scorers.

Apr 2013 - Stannard Shield Competition - R Plunkett

In the quarter final Cobras had a tough game versus Soberton and Newtown. Robin Plunkett beat both Winkworth and Waterson as the first set of matches ended 2-2. In the next sequence of matches Waterson edged out Plunkett 24-22 in the deciding set and Winkworth won two rubbers in straight sets to give his side a 5-2 victory. Two wins by Trevor Emery put Cowplain Blue level 2-2 against PW Red, but in the second sequence Phil Beal won twice in straight sets and Colin Miller beat John Amey to give Water a 5-3 win. Edmons beat Portsmouth Claret 5-1 in their quarter. Purchase and Dowding put Edmonds 4-0 in ther first section. PGC Green beat Cowplain Emerald 5-3 in thier quarter. George Lush helped the victors with straight set victories over Pete Mclellan in the second sequence, having also won in similar fashion in the first set of games. Mclellan won twice for Emerald and Pete Stock got a single.

In Edmonds semi they won 5-4 versus PGC Green after a gruelling encounter ended at 11-55. Two wins by Purchase helped Edmonds to a half way 3-1 kead. Pete Grubb hit back and won two in the second sequence both deuce in the final set. Lush won once for Green to make it four each. The match was decided by a doubles shoot out which Edmonds won 22-12 in the final set.Waterson and Winkworth of Cobras crushed Water Red in their semi without even dropping a leg.

Cowplain Cobras won a one sided final 5-0 against Knowle Edmonds with Steve Waterson winning his three rubbers comfortably. His handicap was 10, even though on this years form it would have been 4. He first played Allan Purchase first who found Waterson's spinny service very difficult and lost 22-15,22-13. Roger Winkworth then beat Fred Dowding 25-23,22-25,25-23 having given away a 13 start. Winkworth was able to get back a lot of Dowding's powerful backhands back and Dowding had trouble with the high ball which Winkworth constantly used.. Dowding had just a two point start against Waterson, but a shock looked possible when he raced in to a 11-2 lead, but Waterson then found his consistency to win 21-18,21-15. Winkworth then beat Purchase 23-26,26-21,26-20 to put Cobras 4-0 up and 1 rubber from victory. John Manuel was brought in for Edmonds for the second group of matches. Cobras weren't going to take any chances and put Waterson number one again and he romped home 21-6,21-10 to complete Cobras victory by a 5-0 margin.

Apr 2013 - Constad Cup Competition - R Plunkett

In their quarter final Scarlet beat Cowplain Blue 5-0 with Eric and Dylan Linsell beating the formidable Roger Winkworth. Soberton in their quarter final beat Cowplain Crimson 7-0 with Pete and Dave Woodace taking hat tricks in straight games. Water Purple beat Cowplain Extra 5-3 despite Steve Long breezing 3 rubbers very convincingly. Ray Hansler, Colin Miller and Neil Lockton won all of the other games in straight sets also to give Purple their win. Cowplain Alexandra beat Knowle Rovers 5-2 with Chris Bone winning both of his rubbers. Neil Landsman added two, losing only to Alan Baldwin. Chris Corner beat Graham Taylor in the final set, but lost in similar fashion to Trevor Farrow.

In the first semi Scarlet beat Water Purple 5-1 with Eric Linsell and son Dylan winning two each very comfortably. Miller got the only response versus Stan Marlow. Cowplain Alexandra got off to a good start against Soberton in their semi as Bone beat Plunkett in 3 sets, but it was the height of their game as Dave Woodacre, Billings and Plunkett took the next 5 rubbers in straight games.

Portsmouth Scarlet won a gripping Costad Cup final edging out Soberton and Newtown of Division one 5-4.Eric Linsell put Scarlet 1-0 up beating Robin Plunkett 24-14 in the final set having made good use of his 10-0 start.His whippy backhand helped him home .Fast improving Div 4 player Dylan Linsell crushed Richard Billings 25-20, 25-5 having had a 15 point start to put Scarlet 2 up.He got firmly on the attack with his forehand and Billings had no answer. Dave Woodacre beat Stan Marlow 25-20,25-21 having given away a 14 point start.Woodacre's use of his serve had Marlow in sixes and sevens. Richard Billings then narrowly lost 24-17,24-22 to Eric Linsell having drawn level at 22 each. This put Scarlet 3-1 in the lead. Stan Marlow put Scarlet in sight of victory by beating Plunkett 27-25,25-22( making good use of his attack against his defensive opponent), but Soberton had other ideas. Woodacre beat Dylan Linsell 14-25,25-19,25-20 to reduce the defecit to 4-2. Billings then used his heavy top spin serve and loop shots to overcome Marlow 25-21,25-23. Woodacre then completed a memorable hat trick against Eric Linsell with a commanding 24-16,24-17 victory. In the deciding rubber Plunkett had a mountain to climb, but his his consistent blocking of spinny and powerful shots made it a thrilling finale.Dylan Linsell produced fierce forehands at the critical time to beat Plunkett 25-20,28-26. This gave Scarlet a superb victory.

The Portsmouth closed tournament was played on the 24th March at the Admiral Lord Nelson school and was dominated by Billy Ho who won a hat trick of titles. The first event was the veterans singles. In the first semi final Mike Rhodes seeded one beat Danny Lucking 11-2,15-13,9-11,12-10. In the other semi Pete Woodacre seeded two edged out Mike Cooksley,11-7,11-8,9-11,1-11,15-13. Rhodes beat Woodacre in the final 11-6,11-5,11-9. In ther junior singles Dylan Linsell beat brother and sister Yaj and Rutna Vashee to reach the final. In the other semi Julian Linsell bt Dan Ashworth 11-4,11-9,12-10. Dylan won the gripping final against his brother 11-6,12-10,5-11,8-11,11-8.In the cadet singles Yaj beat his sister Rutna in 4 sets.

The Peter Goldring event for non Div 1 players had 9 entrants. In the first semi group number 1 seed Billy Edwards beat Graham Wiggins 11-3,8-11,11-4,7-11,11-7 and Joe Golds. In the other group second seed Tim Hampton seeded two beat both the Linsell brothers in 4 sets.The final was won by Hampton 11-4,11-8,11-8.

There were 18 entrants in the mens singles. in the first quarter final group Ho the top seed saw of Cooksley and Pete Woodacre. Mike Gibbs seeded three beat Steve Waterson in 4 sets and Billy Ewdards 12-10,12-10,12-10 in his quarter group. Dave Woodacre seeded four beat Graham Wiggins in straight sets and Tim Hampton in 5 sets. Wiggins having failed to go through upset team mate Hampton also in 5 legs. In the first semi Ho beat Gibbs 11-7,11-7,11-4. Rhodes beat Woodacre 11-2,11-8,11-4 in the other semi. The final was won by Ho 11-7,11-6,8-11,11-4. The mens consolation was won by Pete Grubb 11-7,11,9,11-6 over Dylan Linsell.

In the mens doubles there were 7 pairs. In the first round Cooksley and Rhodes beat Hampton and Wiggins, Fitzgerald and Gibbs beat Joe Golds and Grubb. The Woodacre's seeded two beat Edwards and Waterson in 5 sets. In the first semi Ho and Lucking seeded one beat Cooksley and Rhodes 11-6,11-5,11-8. The Woodacres crushed Paul Fitzgerald and Gibbs 11-7,11-4,11-3 in the other semi. The final was won by Ho and Lucking 11-6,12-10,11-8.

The womens singles final was won by Sandy Collier against Dagmar Hrubisova 11-7,11-8,12-10.Collier also won the mixed doubles with partner Eric Harvey against Hrubisova and Grubb in 4 sets.

The last event and arguably most fun saw a good entry. The first quarter final was won by Lucking over Eric Linsell 21-24,24-22 retired hurt.Dave woodacre beat Billy Edwards 21-15,21-17 having given away a 2 start. Ho beat Gibbs 22-20,22-16 having started 3 adrift. Dylan Linsell beat Joe golds 22-19,20-22,22-19 having had a 4 point start. In the first semi Ho beat Dylan Linsell 25-22,25-22 having started 15 points down. Dave Woodacre played superbly to beat Lucking 23-21,21-16 having given away a 2 start in their semi. Woodacre had only a 3 start in the final and it was no surprise that Ho won 22-17,22-20 in the final to complete his hat trick of titles

The Portsmouth closed tournament attracted a small, but strong entry. The first event was the junior singles which was won by Julian Linsell beating brother Dylan 15-13, 11-9,8-11,11-7. The next event was the veterans singles. In the first semi final Charlie Childs beat Pete Woodacre 11-9,11-7,11-8. In the other Danny Lucking beat John Taylor 11-2,11-6,12-10. In the final Childs romped home 11-9,11-4,11-6. The Peter Goldring event for non Division one players was won by Martin Matuzevicius against Steve Long 11,3,11-3,8-11,13-11 in the final.

In the Blue ribband eveent the mens singles Billy Ho triumphed. In his semi group he beat Matuzevicius 11,8,11-8,11-3 and Childs 11-2,8-11,11-4,11-3. In the other group Lucking beat Ross Saxny 11-8,4-11,11-0,11-9 and Pete Woodacre 4-11,11-8,11-6,8-11,11-4. In the final Ho breezed it 11-7,11-4,11-4. In the consolation David Woodacre beat James Mason in the semi final in 5 sets. John Taylor beat Tim Hampton in straight sets. Dave Woodacre won the final 11-8,11-13,13-11,12-14,11-7.

In the mens doubles the number one seeds Childs and Ho knocked out Jimmy Yeung and Mason and Graham wiggins and Tim Hampton. The second seeds Lucking and Saxby knocked out Matuzevicius and Taylor and edged out the Woodacre's 11-9 in the fifth set. In the final Lucking and Saxby raced to victory 11-6,11-1,11-4.

In the handicap singles Eric Linsell lost to Dave Woodacre having been given a 9 start 24-20,22-24,26-28. Julian Linsell beat Saxby 27-25,27-8 having had a 20 point start. Ho beat Eric Harvey 25-19,25-21 after given away 15.Dylan Linsell made use of his 14 start on Lucking by winning 25-18,25-23.In the first semi final Woodacre beat Julian Linsell 26-22,26-23 having given away a 16 point start. Dylan Linsell beat Ho 22-26,26-24,26-13 with an 18 point start. Dylan won the final against Dave Woodacre 24-22,24-18 having made full use of his 13 start.

Blue beat SESA Perseus 5-1 in the quarter final with two apiece for Billings and Dave Woodacre. Ray Lush got the only reply versus Plunkett. Cowplain Sapphire beat BCA Red of Division one 5-3 in their quarter final. Paul Tinsley and John Amey both won twice having both lost to Andy Stagg. Paul Tomsett won once, but lost to Lee Mullett. Portsmouth Cobalt won 5-3 in their quarter final with Sporting St Clares. Stan Marlow snr won three from three games and son Stan Marlow jnr won both of his rubbers. Eastoke Cougars had a walk over versus PW Red.

In a thrilling Constad Cup Final Cowplain Blue of Division one beat Cowplain Sapphire of Division two 5-3. Blue had to give starts ranging from 9 to 12. Blue's number one Robin Plunkett had three setters. Firstly he beat John Amey 25-20 in third set having looked like losing two sets to nil. Richard Billings then easily beat Paul Tinsley. Bob Shaw pulled one back by beating Pete Woodacre 24-20, 25-23. Plunkett came close to making it three one, but Tinsley pulled off a strong finish to defeat Plunkett 25-22 in their decider. Amey then defeated Woodacre 24-15 in the third set to put Sapphire 3-2 up. Billings then won a vital deciding leg with Shaw 24-22 to level things again. Woodacre easily beat Tinsley two straight to put Blue 4-3 up. Plunkett then had his third three setter with Shaw whom he overtook to 20-16, but Shaw hit top form only to lose out 25-23 having failed to take his one match point.

In their Stannard semi Portsmouth Claret Hurley and Giles disposed of SESA Perseus 8-0. In the other semi Sapphire won 5-1 against Lovedean with three wins for Shaw, one fom Tomsett having lost to Len Couzens. Jim Malcolm replaced Tomsett for the second sequence and beat Sandra Collier to clinch the match. In the quarter finals Claret beat Cowplain Blue 5-1.Shaw and Tomsett took Sapphire to a 5-0 win over Nuffield Blues of Division five. Lovedean of Div 4 beat Cowplain Cobras 5-3 thanks to Collier and Couzens. In the other quarter Perseus beat Sporting St Clares 5-2 with Lush winning three and Alan Bland two having both lost to Graham Wiggins in the first sequence.

In the final of the Stannard shield Gordon Giles and Mike Hurley of Portsmouth Claret beat Cowplain Sapphire 6-2. The first half of the match was shared 2-2 against Jim Malcolm and Bob Shaw as Giles won both of his rubbers, but Mike Hurley lost both of his. In the second sequence of matches Gordon Giles won twice again. Sandwiched in between this Mike Hurley vitally defeated Malcolm 24-18 in the third set having been given a 12 point start. With the match over at 5-2 Shaw sportingly played on, but lost to Hurley as the match ended 6-2.

The Portsmouth Closed tournament was held at the Admiral Lord Nelson school and attracted a healthy entry. The first event was the veterans singles. The first semi final saw number one Charlie Childs beat number two Pete Woodacre 11-9, 11-6, 11-5. In the other semi third seed Paul May defeated Sven Lind the fifth seed 11-9, 11-7, 11-5. The final was won by Childs 11-8, 11-1, 11-8.

The Cadet singles was won by Letitia McMullan who beat fellow 12 year old Jimmy Yeung in the final. In the junior singles first semi Letitia McMullan the first seed beat the second Tim Buckman in straight sets. The other semi saw Yeung beat James Mason 13-11 in the fourth set. The final was won by McMullan over fourth seed Yeung 13-11, 12-10, 11-8.

The first quarter final of the Peter Goldring special Tournament for non Division one Players saw Pete Grubb beat Eric Lindsell in five sets. Number three seed Paul Fitzgerald overcame Dylan Linsell in three sets. Sven Lind the fourth seed also had a straight sets victory over James Mason. Number one seed Callum Shipp surprisingly lost to Heather George in his group which meant he played number two seed Mike Gibbs in the quarter final stage and he lost again 7-11, 11-8, 11-8, 12-14, 7-11. Fitzgerald beat Grubb in four sets in the first semi final. Gibbs beat Lind 11-2, 19-17, 11-5 in his semi final.The final was won by Gibbs 11-8, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9.

The blue Ribband event the mens singles attracted 22 entries. The first quarter final saw number one seed Alex Rorke beat Mike Gibbs comfortably.In his quarter final third seed Mike Rhodes beat number eight Dave Woodacre in straight sets. Number four Billy Ho only conceded 14 points in his demolition of number 15 Roger Winkworth. Number two Charlie Childs beat number 14 Sven Lind 12-10, 11-7, 11-8 in his quarter final.The first semi final saw Rhodes upset Rorke 13-11, 12-10, 11-9. Ho made it another upset by defeating Childs 11-9, 11-7, 11-7 in their semi final. The final was won by Ho the fourth seed 11-6, 6-11,11-9, 11-7.

The first ladies singles semi final saw Letitia McMulln the top seed beat Monika Glusowska in straight sets. The other semi saw Sandra Collier beat Heather George 10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 12-10. The final was won by McMullan 11-5, 11-8, 11-7. The mens consolation was won by 14 year old Martin Matuzevicius who beat Tim Buckman in the final in straight sets. The junior doubles final was won by McMullan and Buckman who defeated Yeung and Matuzevicius in five sets.

The next evenet was the mens doubles. In the first semi fianal first seeds Childs and Ho beat Pete and Dave Woodacre 12-10, 11-4, 11-8. Nunmber two seeds Alex Rorke and Pete Boniface overcame Gibbs and Fitzgerald 11-5, 11-8, 11-8.In a tremendous final Childs and Ho scraped home 11-5, 11-8, 6-11, 8-11, 12-10. The mixed doubles first semi saw number three seeds Fitzgerald and George beat Lucking and Gluszowska. Childs and McMullan beat Eric Harvey and Sandra Collier in their semi. The final was won by Childs and McMullan 11-5, 11-4, 11-7. The ladies doubles was won by Collier and McMullan agaist George and Gluszowska 11-6, 11-6, 14-12.

The final event of the day was the handicap singles. The first quarter final was won by May over Dylan Linsell having given a 15 point lead away-26-23, 26-23. Roger Winkworth beat Fitzgerald having started level by a margin of 21-13, 21-18. Boniface beat Dave Woodacre 21-14, 21-17 having also started level. Lucking had a four point start on Ho and played superbly to win 20-22, 22-14, 22-14. In the first semi Winkworth beat May with a four point start 19-25, 28-26, 25-22.The other semi saw Lucking use his two point start to defeat Boniface 22-20, 21-12. Winkworth then excelled in the final to upset Lucking 22-20, 22-16 having been given just a one point advantage.

There has been an increase in teams ( 5 new teams in and unfortunately Hambledon have dropped out). This has meant we have 49 teams versus 46 last year. After looking at the options we've gone for 5 divisions of 10 teams.

Mar 2010 - Portsmouth 2009-2010 Closed Results

The Portsmouth Closed Tournament was held on Sunday March 24th at the Admiral Lord Nelson School. Roger Winkworth was the star winning the main singles and the doubles. The first event was the veterans singles. In the first semi final Pete Woodacre the second seed easily saw of Sven Lind 11-2,11-5,11-6. The number one seed Lee Orton had a real battle on his hands before beating Steve Long 11-5,12-10,6-11,6-11,11-8. The final was won by Orton 11-8,11-9,6-11,11-9.The Peter Goldring tournament for non division one players saw number one seed Pete Boniface beat Paul Fitzgerald in the first semi 11-6,11-8,11-4. Simone Bertana the number two beat Billy Edwards 14-12, 11-8,11-5. The final saw Boniface come through against team mate Bertana 11-7,11-5,12-10.

In the mens singles Boniface created a shock in his quarter final clash with number one seed Lee Orton winning 11-9,14-12,7-11,11-9. Number three Roger Winkworth beat Mike Gibbs 11-9 in the fourth set.Number four Pete Woodacre lost to Steve Long in straight sets.Number two Dave Woodacre beat Simone Bertana in four sets.In the first semi Winkworth edged out Boniface 11-9,12-14,11-9,3-11,12-10. Dave Woodacre had a tough battle with Long before winning 12-10 in the fourth set.The final was won by Winkworth 12-10,11-8,14-12.The mens consolation final was won by Tim Hampton against Paul Fitzgerald 11-9 in the deciding leg.

In the mens doubles number one pairing Orton and Winkworth beat Boniface and Bertana 11-6,10-12,11-6,11-1 in the semis.The other semi saw number two seeds the Woodacres beat Fitzgerald and Gibbs 12-10 in the fourth set. Orton and Winkworth won the final suprisingly easily 13-11,11-6,11-4.The first quarter final of the handicap singles saw Tim Hampton beat Billy Edwards. Eric Harvey beat Luke Austen in their quarter.Boniface beat Fitzgerald to progerss.Lester Miles had a seven point start on Winkworth and won 23-17,15-23,24-22. In the first semi Eric Harvey defeated Hampton in thee sets. Boniface easily saw off Miles in their semi 22-19,22-14. In the final Harvey was given a 11 point start , but Boniface raced to victory 24-18,24-18.

Apr 2009 - Constad Cup Competition Round-up

In the Constad cup PW Dark Red beat Lovedean 6-1 in the quarter final with Colin Miller the player of the night with three wins, being well supported by John Peters with a double. Eastoke Cougars from Div 4 defeated Div 3 side Unison Green 5-4 despite John Ruse's maximum. John Davey and Jim Broad both scored a brace for the winning outfit. Div 4 champions Cowplain Sapphire beat Div 2 runners-up SESA Perseus 5-4 in their quarter final. Paul Tinsley and John Amey won two apiece for the victors, while Alan Bland fared likewise for Perseus. In the other quarter final Cowplain Blue won a tricky contest 5-1 against fellow div 1 side BCA Red. Richard Billings and Robin Plunkett both won twice. In the first semi final Eastoke Cougars beat last years finalists Dark Red 5-4 with Eric Saunders the star player with a hat trick. John Peters won two for the beaten trio.In the other semi final holders Cowplain Blue found the handicaps too tough against Cowplain Sapphire who cruised to a 5-0 victory with their team of Paul Tinsley, John Amey and Paul Tomsett. Only Billings won a leg in his encounter with Tinsley.The final was won 5-2 by Sapphire over Cougars with John Amey unbeaten. Eric Saunders beat Tinsley and Jim Broad got the better of Tomsett to give Cougars some consolation.

Apr 2009 - Stannard Shield Competition Round-up

The Stannard Shield for veteran players produced some dramatic matches in the last three matches of this competition. Unison Orange from Division two lost 5-4 to Div 3 side Cowplain Emerald in the semi final. The first four rubbers finished all square with Peter Mclellan beating Russell Voysey and Eric Harvey overcoming Oranges Malcolm DEacon.In the second sequence Peter Mclellan won both his games, but Eric Harvey lost both his. So the match was decided in the doubles which Emerald won 22-20 in the deciding set having been given a 4 point start. Cowplain Cocktails beat Division one runners up Cowplain Blue 5-4. Robin Plunkett and Pete Woodacre played for Blue, while Cocktails were represented by Steve Long and Roger Winkworth. All the players beat each other once and lost once, so the match went to the doubles again which Cocktails won in the final leg. In the final Roger Winkworth won all his four singles, but first Ray Tller and next Steve Long couldn't add to Cocktails tally. Emerald's pair of Harvey and Mclellan won the doubles in three sets to take the cup by 5 rubbers to four.

Mar 2009 - Portsmouth Closed Results

The first event was the veterans singles. Charlie Childs beat Pete Woodacre and Steve Long in his group to progress to the final.Mike Rhodes overcame Bill Moody and Sven Lind to join Childs in the final. Childs won the final 11-9, 11-3, 11-4.The Div 2-4 singles was held and number one seed Roger Winkworth was astonishingly knocked out by Pete Grubb who progressed to the final after also defeating Billy Edwards. The other semi final group saw Steve Long beat Sven Lind and Josh Colombi.Long won the final 11-5, 12-10, 11-9. The mens singles was the blue ribband event of the day.In the first Quarter final Charlie Childs the top seed was knocked out in five sets by fifth seed Scott Lawson. Third seed Mike Rhodes beat tenth Kieran Wells in straight sets. Eighth seed Tim Farmer had a good win over fourth Danny Lucking. Second seed Alex Rorke beat ninth Roger Winkworth in straight sets. Rorke beat Farmer 11-6, 11-2, 11-4 in the semi final. Scott Lawson beat Rhodes 11-6, 11-9, 11-5 to reach the final. Rorke won the final with his backs against the wall chopping shots with the occassional surprise attacks-11-5,13-11,8-11, 11-6.

The ladies singles was won by Sandra Collier in beating Heather George 11-5, 11-8, 9-11, 11-7.The mixed doubles was won by Sandra Collier and Eric Harvey against Heather George and Roger Winkworth 12-10, 11-9, 6-11, 12-10. The consolation singles was taken by Sven Lind who overcame Pete Grubb in four sets. In the handicap singles semi final Billy Edwards had a 15 start on Scott Lawson, but lost 25-12,23-25, 21-25. In the other semi Lester Miles overcame Tim Buckman with just a one point start winning 21-13, 16-21, 21-19. Miles played superbly in the final to beat Lawson 26-9, 23-26, 26-10 after being given a 17 point start. In the mens doubles number one seeds Charlie Childs and Danny Lucking squeezed home against fifth seeds Andy Bugden and Tim Farmer after saving three match points in the fourth set.In the first semi final the top seeds found the going easier when beating Pete Woodacre and Steve Long in straight sets.Number two seeds Alex Rorke and Scott Lawson beat fourth seeds Roger Winkworth and Robin Plunkett also in straight sets. The final was very tight, but Rorke and Lawson triumphed 14-16, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9.
